Mask Portraits

1977

In these portraits the subject’s face is covered by masks made from life-size photos of his own face. At times the photos look like pieces of clear glass, but they’re actually covering what is underneath them.

They ask questions and create contradictions:

Is the figure winking at us or are both eyes actually shut behind the photo?

A photo reveals the eyes under the glasses – but also stops them seeing.

Is the mouth with the cigarette a photo within a photo or a hole in a photo revealing a real mouth?
