From an outside perspective they appear to be looking at each other. The more we see from their particular viewpoints, however, the more it appears they are looking at themselves.
Through their heads, like whispered thoughts, or fading memories, are images from the past. They imply a duty of care which is now reversed, though the bond is just as strong.
