Serpentine Gallery – Installation 1

1981

This was one of two pieces carried out at the Serpentine Gallery in London as part of the annual Summer Shows.

In this piece supports were fixed to an exterior wall of the gallery in such a way as to describe three horizontal bands. Photos were taken of passers-by using a telephoto lens and the resulting life-size prints of sections of their bodies were progressively fixed to the supports. As more photos were added the effect was to create a virtual crowd of people made up of individuals who were never actually there at the same time

There is a strong tendency when viewing the work to visually slide the horizontal bars in order to try and match up the heads, torsos and legs. In fact none of these belongs to the same person. They do however merge together to create a composite snapshot of the daily life taking place outside the gallery during the period of the exhibition.
