3D Jigsaw

1984

This started as a group of objects within a wire space frame. Photos were taken from all sides as well as above and below. The resulting life-size prints were cut into nine equal parts and fastened to the sides of 27 cubes.  This creates a three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle in which each of the cubes has only one correct location.

The second puzzle was made by photographing the initial structure, partly completed, from 45 degree angles. The resulting prints were then cut into nine and fastened to cubes of the same size. This puzzle is even more complicated to complete and creates increasingly complex spatial illusions of a cube floating within a cube.

There is a third puzzle which is based on shots of the second structure from 45 degrees and made in the same way as the others. The jigsaw becomes even more difficult at the same time as the forms progressively distort and break down. The process could continue….and continue….
