1972-3

All three of these early sequences are about the unreal world of the photograph, where reality and the illusion of reality are interchangeable.

In Landscape a small fire in the foreground gradually spreads and it becomes clear that it is the picture itself that is on fire. It had not been a landscape, just a photograph of one. As the photo burns away the real landscape is revealed. But then there is a small fire in the foreground…..

In Couple there are two figures that are in fact the same person, but existing in different time scales. All the actions of one of them have actually taken place some time before those of the other figure. So when one of them starts to burn, his actions actually precede the fire by some time and it is in fact the image rather than the person which is being destroyed.

In Figure in a landscape a figure slowly walks towards us through a distant landscape. He turns and tears apart what he has just walked through, revealing it to be just an image in a photographic studio. Secure in his home environment, he relaxes and, frozen in this relaxation, he burns himself away to reveal ………. a distant landscape.
