Chair Woman
1983
The initial idea was for Chair woman no. 2. The structure of the chair both dictates and contains the form of the figure. Her presence is recorded, though she is clearly no longer there.
The addition of the other two pieces creates a simple three-dimensional cartoon strip.
In Chair woman no. 1 the figure is walking with the folded chair in her hand. She is clearly in control of it. However the structure through which she is walking and which both supports and contains her very much reflects both the form and construction of the chair.
After pausing to unfold and sit down in the chair, the third piece represents the inevitable conclusion. The chair has snapped shut. The figure is squeezed flat and held captive within the structure.
