Poster Paster
1979
This was an early work, carried out on a 48 sheet (3m x 6m) advertising hoarding in Manchester and supported by a commercial sponsor.
The bill paster was photographed in the act of covering two advertising images with new posters. When the life-size prints were subsequently pasted over the new posters they resulted in some interesting visual outcomes.
Central to these was the visual “trail” left by the paster in the record of his past activities. It was also interesting to see the image of someone pasting up his own image, whilst in the act of pasting up another image. All of this in the context of the interesting mix of advertising and real-life imagery.
The photographs are obviously pasted on top of the posters. In places they cover the poster, but reveal it at the same time (albeit in black and white). In other places they actually reveal what is underneath the top poster – like an X-ray through the present to the past.
